These are online learning resources that the library subscribes to, so you can access for free with your library card!

 

Gale Courses Gale Courses — Gale Courses offers a wide range of highly interactive, instructor led courses that you can take entirely online. As a library card holder you are entitled to these courses at no cost. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month.

Linkedin learning Linkedin Learning — Choose from thousands of online courses to learn in-demand skills from real-world industry experts. Also available as an app for your mobile device.

 

Mango languages Mango Languages — Language learning database designed to equip you with conversational abilities. Over 15 ESL courses taught in patron’s native language. Learn anytime and anywhere with remote access. Also available as an app for your mobile device.

Niche Academy Niche Academy — An online learning and community engagement tool to connect learners to ready-to-use tutorials and specialized training. Niche Academy provides access to Cariboo Regional District Library databases as well as other tutorials.

  • In Our Time – Episodes of BBC Radio’s popular ‘history of ideas’ show are archived here. Listen to a podcast on the age of the universe, or whether we are near to achieving the thinking, feeling computer.
  • TED Ideas Worth Spreading – TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) offers “ideas worth spreading…1500+ talks to stir your curiosity.”
  • TEDX Events –  Designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue at the local level. Check out the Editors Picks, or look for upcoming webcasts.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

What is a MOOC? A wide range of free not-for-credit (some fees apply for credit courses) courses commonly offered through universities and colleges, and open to anyone. Course length and time commitments vary. Teaching is through video lectures, podcasts, online discussions, and links to articles and ebooks.

  • Coursera – courses that span the humanities, medicine, biology, social sciences, mathematics, business and computer science. Notable courses offered through the University of Alberta & Coursera are Indigenous Canada and Science Literacy.
  • edX – partnership between MIT, Harvard, Berkeley and University of Texas. McGill University, the University of Toronto and others, offering courses “designed to be interesting, fun, and rigorous.”
  • FutureLearn – is a massive open online course provider founded in the United Kingdom in 2012 by 12 university partners. Students can complete one of 418 short courses to learn new skills in areas like digital product management, ecology and wildlife science, and the future of globalization; they may also obtain microcredentials from leading universities and major companies.
  • Udemy – largest online learning provider offering over 150,000 courses in 65 languages. While students can take a variety of free courses, many MOOCs require a fee. By paying for premium content, users also gain access to features like direct messaging, Q&A, and certificates of completion. Additionally, Udemy provides personal development content that enables users to manage stress, improve their self-esteem, and cultivate meaningful relationships.

 Tutorial Learning

  • Khan Academy – Thousands of high quality short videos on everything from arithmetic to physics, finance, and history, and hundreds of skills to practice. Created by Salman Khan who began posting math tutorials on YouTube, it’s a fantastic way for high school and university students to get help with difficult concepts.
  • Mauril – Ready to take your French or English language skills to the next level? Test your listening comprehension skills with audio and video content from CBC and Radio-Canada. Progress at your own pace and step out of your comfort zone with language challenges. Download the app on Apple and Android mobile phones and tablets, or use the website version. Simply create a profile and access your learning journey from any device, whenever and wherever you wish!
