British Columbia Archives - Images of Historical Birth, Marriage and Death Records
The BC Archives is allowed to release personal information about deaths that occurred at least 20 years ago, marriages that took place at least 75 years ago, and births registered at least 120 years ago. Provincial registration of births, marriages and deaths began the year after British Columbia joined Confederation in 1871. Phase 1 of this data upload is substantially complete. Phase 2, now underway, will add more images and indexed information, including pre-1872 records, deaths that occurred overseas during the Second World War, between 1939 and 1945.

Glenbow Museum of Calgary - features several tools of value to the genealogist:

University of Calgary Archives & Special Collections - with over five linear kilometres of archival records, this collection holds a wealth of information for the genealogy researcher, "including theses, yearbooks, campus newspapers and the private archives of influential Canadians" (University of Calgary).

Library and Archives Canada - Canadian Passenger Lists - Search passenger lists for vessels traveling before 1865, between 1865 to 1935, and after 1935.

Library and Archives Canada - Immigration records - starting with records as early as 1787, search over 16 databases documenting historic immigration movements to Canada.

Library and Archives Canada - Canadian Censuses - Online portal to Canadian censuses dating back to 1640.

Library and Archives Canada - Land Grants of Western Canada, 1870-1930 - central database for registered homesteads in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba between 1870 and 1930 under the order of the Dominion Lands Act.

Library and Archives Canada - Military Heritage - central access point for military records dating as far back as the War of 1812. Published biographies, numerous searchable databases, and research aids provide helpful tools to get researchers started.

LDS Family Search - search the 1881 censuses of Canada and England, and the 1880 census of the United States. Also available are The Pedigree Resource File; The International Genealogical Index ; The U.S. Social Security Index, the Vital Records Index for Scandinavia and Mexico.

The Early Alberta Newspaper collection - features access to all early Alberta newspapers published between 1885 and 1944.

 The Local and Alberta Histories collection - features digitized books and books on microfiche detailing Alberta's past from private authors, to government and commercial publications. Some texts are in French.

FREE Online tutorial from called “Getting Started On” - This webinar is about an hour long and takes you through various types of data available to you through their website.   It is a valuable tool for those just starting out and a great introduction to the Library’s Subscription Database through Ancestry.


American Library of Congress - search the holdings of the largest library in the world, with more than 170 million items in print format, audio recordings, maps, sheet music, visual materials and more.

BYU Family History Archive - search published genealogy and family history books, including histories of families, county and local histories, how-to books on genealogy, genealogy magazines and periodicals (including some international), medieval books (including histories and pedigrees), and gazetteers.

Ellis Island - search the records of more than 22 million passengers and members of ships' crews that entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York from 1892-1924.
